Warm and Homey Eco-Sanctuary Seeks Open-Hearted Third Roomie (Dufferin/Davenport)
Dear future roommate,
We are two old-ish friends who have been visioning and trying to craft a very particular home for ourselves. We have our space now, and, our third friend having gone on to live with his girlfriend, we are looking for a new roommate to see the vision through, to join our lease from Jan. 1 through the end of October, and hopefully beyond!
Both of us are spiritual folks, but very grounded in this world. We've done our youthful time of blue-sky traveling, eyes wide open to the world, and have both returned home to set roots and build what we found. Borrowing from Thoreau's Walden - we've spent years crafting castles in the air, and now it's time to start putting foundations under them. Both of us are in graduate school - Amy for holistic psychotherapy, Jason for herbal medicine, and soon to be anthropology as well. We're more interested in nourishment than excitement, more interested in comfort than in thrills, more in the later half of our 20s than the earlier. We want the kind of fun that builds alongside deep wellness, rather than see-sawing back and forth at its expense.
Both of us are engaged in long personal healing journeys as well. Each of us, in our own way, has come out of a lifestyle that included pushing ourselves way too hard, and have found sweet solace in discovering ourselves as rather sensitive beings, and embracing and loving that, and eventually starting to kick ass with it too. The calm we have sought inside ourselves, we're now seeking to externalize into our home. We are crafting Zen space. It will be full of sweet laughter, levity and play, good downtempo soulful LP's; it will be quiet and serene, a place of retreat. A place where the vibe naturally starts turning down as the sun sets, so that by the time 9:30 or 10:00 hits, there is space and excitement for sleep. Sometimes we go out and party too. But the home itself has a default vibe that lives on the solar cycle, and invites us to join it. It needs to be quiet, not in a way that feels like a deprivation, but in a way that throbs gently, thickly, with the heartbeat of the earth.
Communication is key. We invest in social hygiene - having the courage and discipline to take ownership over the energy that we're putting into the space. Doing so helps each of us not to take one another's moods and fluctuations personally, but rather, learn over time how to recognize them, and what kind of support we each need and want to navigate through them. We feel that this kind of blend of loving support and accountability gives each of us space and structure to be emotionally honest in our own lives in the house, and therefore to be able to relax, and grow. We're invested in learning how to engage at a real emotional depth without spending unwanted hours in emotional processing. And we think we're starting to get it right. We want to be able to move from joyful playful levity into internality and silence and back again, with practiced ease. There's a lot of love here, and a lot of space. When those two exist in dynamic tension, that's when the simple subtle magic happens. We want to swim in that magic pretty much all the time.
The kitchen is a hearth. We cook, to nourish ourselves and each other. We care a lot about where our food comes from - farmers' markets, Karma Co-op, and the very special, sizeable garden space in our backyard. We are looking for someone to share the joyful work of really cooking with - making meat and veggie stocks, ferments and spice blends, mayonnaise and mustard, and whatever else inspires, to the rhythm of last night's playlist from The Signal, or really excellent hip-hop. Happy plants, root vegetables in hanging baskets, dancing.
We are looking for someone in their mid-20s to mid-30s, someone who has a clear enough personal mission and practical course of work and/or study that they complement our clear-eyed, feet-on-the-ground, good-work-in-the-world vibe. Someone who is excited by putting time and effort into a deep communal kitchen and a lush garden, ideally with some farming and/or formal cooking experience behind them. Ideally, someone who has spent some time in intentional community living or some other kind of environment where learning how to communicate with self-awareness and intention was key. Someone who has some kind of personal growth path and practice, whatever that looks like, and with whatever regularity you get around to it. Quietude and gentleness of spirit are paramount; playfulness, humour, and generosity of spirit top our list too. Someone who was willing to read this far, because their heart yearns for the right kind of home, something they can put effort into building and in turn be built up by; someone for whom reading these words has felt like no great effort at all.
We can't wait to meet you :)
About the home - we have 3 storeys, semi-detached, at Dufferin and Davenport (below the steep part of the hill!), steps from Dufferin and Davenport buses. Basement is unfinished, good for storage, with washer/dryer, and a root cellar. Main floor has living room, bathroom, a small office space, and a kitchen with walkout to enclosed porch and backyard, upstairs is three bedrooms and another bathroom. It's a clean and well-kept home. Backyard has large garden space, kept for 40 years by Italian grandmother, with good southern exposure - landlord says the soil is 'magical.' Rent is $710, including all utilities and internet. Easy walking distance to Earlscourt Park. Available Jan. 1.

I just got ask are you and your roommate Christian?
i do have a cooking background, I just recently graduated from Humber College for Culinary Arts (culinary skills). I did use to do a little bit of gardening with my mom and grandmother when I was little. Would you allow a tv in the house (40" flatscreen tv with a PS3)?
