Looking for roommate who knows ASL / is willing to learn
The Union Collective has been about for a year.
We are looking for someone who is Deaf or willing to learn ASL (American Sign Language).
Our household includes four adults and one child one, one of whom is Deaf.
We are multi-generational, multi-lingual, diversely abled, multi-cultural and happy to add more multis.
We currently have one room available.
Move-in: negotiable. We are interested in finding the right fit rather than filling the room quickly.
These are the values we cherish:
COMMITMENT TO OPEN COMMUNICATION
In a clear and practical way; as needed one-to-one and in house meetings with patience and an open mind.
Being able to agree to disagree but still having an open discussion is essential.
Given that our house includes people who are Deaf and people who are not, it often requires a bit more patience.
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
We save money by sharing a house but we are not cheap, we invest in quality in what
we choose to surround ourselves with. This certainly applies to our food share.
SUSTAINABILITY
To care for our environment: within the house, towards each other, the community at large and the earth. Being open to suggestions from others on how we can do better while understanding everyone contributes in their way.
PARENTING
Children are an intricate part of our community who need to be heard and supported just as
much as anyone in our community. Providing healthy boundaries is part of that support.
We respect parent's choices and assure their values align with other parents' and other
house mates' values and needs.
FOOD
We have a food share, we all pay $250 a month and everyone cooks dinner once a week.
We buy organic and local as much as possible. We are omnivores but the majority of our meals are vegetarian.
Vegetarians, vegans and people with dietary requirements are welcome.
COMMUNITY
We are not a party house but we are a social house with visitors, dinners and gatherings.
We are looking for people who are dedicated to our "house family" and will contribute.
In chores and socially. We welcome people with busy lives, there is no expectation to be home
at a certain time or always be home for dinner, only that you take your responsibilities seriously.
DECISION MAKING
We have house meetings to discuss and vote on all decisions and finances. The goal is to be efficient
and practical in these meetings while providing a space for everyone to be heard.
This is a relatively new community and figuring out the logistics is always an ongoing process, we are still working on that and would love to welcome someone who is keen to be part if that process.
Practically:
- Rent would be between $600 - $800 (depending on the responsibilities you take on)
- Part of our rent goes into a house fund to pay for utilities, internet and what we decide to buy for the house collectively
- The food share is additional: $250/month
- All decisions, financial and otherwise are made on a consensus basis
It is a 5-bedroom house, recently renovated with:
- two living rooms
- two kitchens (we only really use one)
- two brand new bathrooms
- a guest room for visitors
- a garage
- a deck
- a garden (mostly paved, unfortunately)
- a front and back garden
- washer and dryer
If you are interested, please answer the following questions:
1. Why are you interested in communal living? What is your experience with communal living?
2. What are three of your core values?
3. Name a pet peeve.
4. How do you feel about living with children or someone with special needs?
5. What is your sleeping schedule? How sensitive are you to noise?
6. How much time would you commit to the house house in terms of cooking, cleaning, gardening or any other way to improve our community?
7. Are you Deaf? Do you know ASL? Are you willing to learn?
8. Tell us something about yourself.
